Visit the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Royal Brompton Hospital, London, and National Heart and Lung Institute (Imperial College). With over 20 years of experience, it is the longest-established unit for the investigation of occupational asthma in Europe. Courses include:

• Occupational Asthma Workshop – 1 day course; held annually

Date: Tuesday 1 May 2012

Brief description: Especially suitable for Occupational Health Advisers, Occupational Health Nurses and Practice Nurses, the day covers current issues in the diagnosis of occupational asthma and work-exacerbated asthma in a hospital setting, and examines the role of the Occupational Heath Practitioner in this process. The management of cases of occupational asthma in the workplace is examined. The implications for individuals receiving a diagnosis of work-related asthma is discussed, incorporating a presentation and interview with a patient volunteer. Other topics covered include workplace surveillance and pre-placement issues related to asthma.

• Lung Function Testing in the Workplace: Intermediate Level – 1 day course; held twice annually

Brief description: Suitable for all Occupational Health professionals with a particular interest in spirometry and lung function testing, and their implications in the workplace. Examines the role of lung function testing in the workplace.
The day includes discussion of optimal spirometry in the workplace: interpretation, abnormalities, longitudinal changes, individual variation and role in health surveillance; use in pre-placement screening/fitness to work; risk assessment of people with asthma including the role of other physiological tests.
NB: This is not a practical Spirometry course; a working knowledge of practical spirometry is assumed.
Accreditation: CPD – 5 clinical points; RCN Accreditation Unit – 5 study hours (event ref. 3803).

• Introductory Medical Statistics – 2 day course, held annually

Dates: Thursday 6 - Friday 7 October 2011 – course full; next to be held in Autumn 2012 (dates tbc)
Registration fee: £250, including handout, lunch and refreshments on both days; optional evening meal on the first day
Brief description: Designed to introduce doctors, nurses, clinical research fellows and postgraduate students (anyone who uses statistics in their work or research) to statistical concepts including: epidemiological study design; identifying and describing different data types; selection of appropriate statistical tests (two and three group scenarios); calculation of sample size for basic study designs; understanding the principles behind various forms of regression analysis, including survival analysis.
Accreditation: 12 non-clinical, external CPD points to be sought
